About Pruning
Education Pruning
After a newly planted tree has fully established its roots, it’s time for the first pruning, ideally during the growing season. This initial pruning addresses potential growth issues, such as removing branches with weak connections to the main stem. The goal is to promote a strong, balanced crown for healthy growth in the years to come.
Crown Correction Pruning
If education pruning was missed, or if the tree’s crown develops irregularities as it matures, crown correction pruning helps restore proper structure and balance, supporting healthier long-term growth.
Clearance Pruning
Clearance pruning is essential when branches extend over roads or sidewalks. Traffic regulations specify a clearance height of 4.5m over roads and 2.5m over sidewalks, but to account for natural drooping, we recommend clearances of 5m over roads and 3m over sidewalks. Clearance pruning also improves accessibility in areas like backyards.
Crown Health Pruning
Using specialized climbing techniques, we access every part of the crown to address issues such as crossing, rubbing, diseased, or dead branches. We also lighten heavy branches or stems and may secure them with a crown anchor if needed. The result is a healthier, thinner tree that retains its natural character. During this process, we also assess the tree for potential hazards, signs of disease, parasites, or structural weaknesses.
Crown Limitation Pruning
For trees that need to remain a specific size due to their location, crown limitation pruning is ideal. This process should start while the tree is still young and be repeated at short intervals (typically every 1-6 years, depending on the species) to avoid large cuts and support long-term shape management.
Crown Reconstruction
If a tree loses a significant portion of its crown due to storm or snow damage, or as a result of improper pruning, crown reconstruction is necessary. This process involves multiple pruning sessions, performed annually or biannually, to gradually restore the tree’s crown structure.
Fruit Tree Pruning
For fruit trees, pruning techniques that thin the crown and are tailored to the specific species can enhance fruit production and overall health.
